Aures AI: listening for the pest that eats a tree from the inside
A six-person Doha team built a phone app that identifies a hidden infestation by sound alone, catching a beetle larva weeks before any leaf shows damage.
I came across this one while reading about a pest that has quietly plagued palm growers since the 1980s: the red palm weevil. Its larvae bore into a date palm's trunk and feed there for weeks, and by the time the crown wilts or the wood turns hollow, the tree is usually already lost. A small startup in Doha, Aures AI, decided the fix wasn't a better trap or a sharper eye. It was a microphone.
Aures builds what the team calls an acoustic intelligence layer: a sensor (or, in its simplest form, just a smartphone) that listens to the faint, repetitive chewing sound larvae make deep inside living wood, then separates that signature from wind, traffic, and handling noise using a trained classification model. Point the app at a trunk, record a few seconds, and it returns a confidence score on the spot, online or offline. In field trials the company reports 92 percent classification accuracy and detection three to six weeks earlier than visible symptoms, which is the entire game with this pest: treatment only works before the colony is established.
The clever part isn't the microphone (acoustic pest detection research goes back over a decade). It's that a six-person team turned it into something a field worker runs from a phone, plus a fixed always-on version for high-value palms, instead of a lab setup that needs a specialist. And the architecture is explicitly built to generalize: the founders, who met at the intersection of signal processing and machine learning, are already porting the same acoustic core toward early diagnostics in healthcare and predictive maintenance for industrial motors and bearings, on the premise that a stethoscope for one domain is a stethoscope for many.
What I like here is the restraint. No chemicals sprayed pre-emptively across a plantation, just targeted treatment once a specific tree is flagged. Less waste, fewer trees lost, and a genuinely underserved niche that nobody was racing to build for. Worth watching once the healthcare pivot actually ships.
