Bubble Robotics: giving offshore infrastructure a robot that never comes home
A Swiss team of ex-NASA and ETH Zurich engineers built modular underwater robots that dock, recharge, and stay at sea for six months, turning annual ship inspections into a continuous digital twin.
I came across Bubble Robotics while reading about the ridiculous cost of checking on things underwater. Offshore wind foundations, subsea cables, pipelines: keeping an eye on them usually means chartering a vessel and a crew for a few days, at up to $100,000 a day, then waiting a year before the next look. That gap between inspections is where problems quietly grow.
Founded in 2025 by former NASA and ETH Zurich robotics engineers, Bubble's answer is to stop treating ocean monitoring as an occasional expedition and start treating it as a permanent presence. Their platform, BubbleDock, is a floating station that deploys and retrieves modular underwater robots on its own, no crew required. The robots stay submerged for up to six months, recharging at the dock between missions and gathering optical, sonar, and environmental data continuously instead of once a year.
The clever part is what happens to that data. An onboard AI pipeline turns the sensor readings into a millimeter-scale digital twin of whatever it's watching, a cable, a wind turbine base, a pipeline, and flags defects and anomalies as they appear rather than months later in a report. The company's founders point out that 80 to 90 percent of offshore inspection costs come from vessels and crews alone, so removing the ship doesn't just cut a bill, it changes inspection from an annual snapshot into daily or weekly coverage.
It's early: the company is still validating that hardware survives biofouling, storms, and half a year underwater without a hand to fix it. But the framing stuck with me: instead of building a better ship, they built infrastructure that simply never leaves. If it holds up, it's a genuinely different way to keep an eye on a part of the world we almost never look at closely.
