Hyper Hyve: a lid that learns the sound of a healthy hive
A small Wisconsin beekeeping company built a solar-powered hive lid that listens for a colony about to swarm, days before a beekeeper would notice.
I found this one on a small-town beekeeping blog in Wisconsin, not a robotics journal, which is usually a good sign.
Kinni Bees, a family apiary near River Falls, just launched a hardware line called Hyper Hyve, and its first product, ProTop v1, is a beehive lid. It is solar-powered, connects over cellular so it works with no Wi-Fi, and packs a microphone, a gas sensor, an accelerometer, and a temperature and humidity probe into a form that slides onto any standard Langstroth hive.
The point of all that is to stop opening the hive. Most beekeepers only find a problem, a queen gone missing, a colony about to swarm, disease taking hold, by cracking the box apart, which stresses the bees every time it happens. ProTop instead listens: the buzz changes before a swarm leaves, the queen's piping shifts when something's off, and gas signatures shift with disease.
Here is the clever part. Rather than use one fixed alarm threshold for every hive, the system first learns each individual colony's own normal baseline, then watches for deviations from it. That is what lets it flag swarm preparation 48 to 72 hours in advance, combining acoustic and temperature signals rather than trusting either alone. A companion app also closes the loop: tap an NFC tag through your beekeeping gloves during a manual inspection, answer two quick questions, and that label feeds straight back into the model.
This is not a lab spinout with a funding round behind it. It is a beekeeper who decided the fix for colony losses starts with better listening rather than more chemistry, and financed the first batch through a crowdfunding campaign instead.
If it holds up at scale, the payoff has nothing to do with honey. Pollinator collapse is a food-security problem, and a lid that buys 48 hours of warning before a hive fails is a small price against that.
