Sonic Fire Tech: putting out fires with sound instead of water
A small Cleveland startup founded by former NASA acoustics engineers uses inaudible low-frequency sound waves to detect and suppress fires in seconds, without water or chemicals.
I stumbled on this while reading about wildfires eating through the hills outside Los Angeles, and the detail that stopped me was a house that kept catching small flames along its roof and eaves, each one dying out on its own, with no water in sight.
That's Sonic Fire Tech, a small Cleveland, Ohio startup founded by former NASA acoustics engineers, including Geoff Bruder, who spent years researching thermal energy conversion at the space agency. Their system fights fire with sound: a piston pumps pulses of infrasound, at or below 20Hz, through metal ducts hidden in a building's ceiling and eaves. Sensors detect a flame in milliseconds, and the generator answers within seconds, projecting an inaudible field that pushes oxygen away from the fuel and breaks the combustion chain before it spreads.
Using sound against fire isn't new: DARPA studied it from 2008 to 2011, and university labs built subwoofer-like extinguishers afterward. What Sonic Fire Tech got right is the frequency. Earlier attempts worked at 30 to 60Hz, loud enough to rattle windows and annoy neighbors. Staying at 20Hz and below keeps the system silent to humans and pets while letting the waves travel farther, up to 25 feet in the company's own tests, without losing strength. That's the clever part: the physics was already known, the breakthrough is a frequency band nobody had pushed into at this scale.
The company started by targeting embers landing on roofs during wildfires, and is now adapting the same system for kitchen fires too, one of the most common causes of house fires. It is running pilots with California utilities, aiming for around 50 home installations in early 2026.
I like that this isn't a smarter camera or another LLM wrapper. It's old physics, rediscovered at a frequency nobody bothered to try, packaged into something that could sit quietly in a ceiling next to the smoke detector.
